How to Buy, Store and Use Wheat Germ

Wheat germ is an excellent source of Vitamin E. Wheat is one of the many types of whole grains that has been a staple food for over half the world. When you eat whole grains, you get all the healthful parts of the grain - the fiber and nutrient rich bran, the endosperm, and the germ. You can get the goodness of whole grains starting first thing in the morning with a bowl of oatmeal.

How to Buy

  • Wheat germ is sold in both toasted and natural or raw forms.

  • Many people prefer the toasted because it has a better flavor.
  • Wheat germ is sold in bags, in bulk, and in jars.
  • Found in most major supermarkets, usually in the cereal aisle.

How to Store

  • Store in the refrigerator or freezer. The unsaturated fats in wheat germ will go rancid if kept at room temperature.

  • Will keep for about one year under refrigeration.

How to Use

  • Sprinkle wheat germ on dry cereal, when making hot cereal, on salad, in casseroles.

  • Bake into quick and yeast bread.
  • Use like bread crumbs in meat loaf and patties.
