Food Selection Tips at Restaurants

Ever found yourself staring at the menus in fast-food restaurants, not knowing what would be the better choice for both your taste buds and body? Fear not, by following these general tips, you will be able to enjoy healthier eat-out food at restaurants!

  • Choose wisely at fast food restaurants. Fast foods can occasionally be part of your meal plan. Many fast food restaurants provide a brochure listing food exchanges and other nutrition information about their menu items. Ask for it.
  • Enjoy French fries, but order the smallest size or split them with a friend.
  • Minimize your intake of calories and fat by choosing fast food items such as grilled chicken sandwiches and small burgers.
  • Look for healthy choices. Some fast food restaurants offer baked potatoes and salads with reduced or low calorie dressing.
  • Order foods that are baked, broiled, grilled or steamed instead of fried.
  • Ask to have your food prepared without added fat or added salt.

  • Request salad dressings, sauces and gravies on the side.
  • Squeeze fresh lemon on chicken, fish and vegetables for a tangy flavor.
  • Ask for sugar substitutes and diet soft drinks.
  • Order the fruit cup or melon wedge from the appetizer list for dessert.
  • Beware of gigantic portions. Eat about the same amount you usually eat while at home and ask for a to-go box so you can enjoy the rest the following day.
