Are Organic Foods Better For You…

If you have visited the grocery store in the last while, you probably have noticed that some foods are marked as 100% organic. You might even be tempted to buy because you know that there is a better taste to these kinds of foods. Organic foods indeed are better because they are grown with the methods used by farmers in the past, with no pesticides and of course no genetic modifications.

Since the 1950s, a growing trend began to emerge where crops were treated with pesticides to help protect them from pests that tend to ruin these crops. This also definitely meant that individuals that bought this produce were now taking in these pesticides.

Moreover, meat and poultry are often given hormones to make them grow faster. In fact, as many as two-thirds of the cattle that is used for meat in the United States were given growth hormones and as a result, the residue is left in the meat when humans consume it.

Organic Pasta.

Various flours and other ingredients used in pasta used to be organic and this was not indicated on the packaging, because in those days, there was no distinction because everything was organic. Presently however, most of the pasta on the grocery shelves is not organic and those companies that offer organic pasta proudly mark it on their packaging. Does organic pasta taste better than non-organic pasta? Several people think it certainly does taste better and they can tell the difference right away.

Organic Turkey & Chicken.

Organic poultry and turkey on offer is only allowed to display organic packaging if the birds were raised with no hormones and no antibiotics. Top-of-the-line organic poultry are not those that were free range instead of grown in controlled settings. There is certainly a difference in the taste of the hormone-packed meats and organic meats.

Organic Meat.

The majority of cows that Americans eat come from cows that were given growth hormones to fatten them up quicker. They are given six different hormones. Studies have been concluded that humans consuming these hormones left in the meat can lead to health problems, though these are normally independent tests. Serious health effects have not been noted, but one thing is clear, organic meat tastes better, but it is considerably more expensive than meat purchased that was given hormones.

Last Thoughts.

Obviously, eating organic foods is a personal choice, but there are some major differences in taste and possible health benefits from eating organic foods. Right now, organic is very trendy, but the trend for most people has not caught on because they do not understand the benefits of eating organic or they simply cannot afford the additional costs.

It is a personal choice and those that eat organic will continue to tell of their benefits, those that do not may soon turn to organics because of the many benefits that may be gained from not eating pesticide ridden foods or meats that have growth hormones.
